Growing up in Scottsdale, AZ, Bulldog softball player Shelby Fisher always had a connection to Starkville, MS. Since the day she arrived on campus, Fisher has wanted to help the Bulldog softball become a team that becomes a National power. Heading into her junior season on the diamond, Fisher has seen a huge change in the Bulldog softball program that leads her to believe that they are headed in the right direction. That change has helped lead the Bulldogs to a great start on the early season and has Fisher believing that the sky is the limit.
Growing up, Fisher always wanted to be a part of a team. Softball gave her that option and she ran with it. Being able to continue her softball career at Mississippi State was also something that Fisher treasures.
“I played a lot of other sports, but nothing made me feel like softball did,”said Fisher. “I just clicked when it came to softball. I lived softball, I would dream at night about softball. I have always liked being a member of a team and thats what drove me to softball. Softball was my calling, I can honestly say that.”
“I grew up in Arizona and I always wanted to go to school out of state,” said Fisher. “My mom is a graduate of Mississippi State so I guess you can say i have always had Bulldog in me. So it was an easy decision to be a Bulldog. I love our cowbells. Its like the symbol of our school. No other school has it. Cowbells are Mississippi State.”
The change that has taken place within the Bulldog program is obvious. The team is working harder then they ever have and the results are showing on the field. No matter what the situation is, Fisher and her teammates will never give up and will fight until that last pitch is thrown.
“Everyone on the team has a new attitude,”said Fisher. “You can see that we want to be here. We want to win every single time we take the field. We are working hard everyday and are getting so much better. Our attitude now is to leave it all on the field on every single day and every single game.”
“The new coaches are great,” said Fisher. “They have a passion for this sport just like all of the players do. They have a wealth of knowledge and are not afraid to get on you if they need to and expect you to give your all on every play and every day. I never hesitate to go talk to them and ask them questions. They have a love for the game, thats for sure. Its all about working hard for them.”
“My teammates and I think about the process all the time,” said Fisher. “We worry about everything that we can control. We are understanding the sport a lot better then we did before. We are focused on the little things about the game and that’s what is making us a better team.”
Playing in the SEC, the Bulldogs are used to playing some of the top teams in the nation. This weekend, they will also get a chance to play some of the top teams in the nation. Fisher and her teammates take that as a challenge and look forward to matching their skills against top level teams. She also wants to make sure the Bulldog nation is willing to show the Bulldogs all the support that a team of their caliber is deserved.
“I think its a chance to learn when you play those teams,” said Fisher. “You can learn a lot about yourself. We are not scared to play anyone. That number behind your name doesn’t mean anything to us. We want to play them.”
“We want all of the Bulldog fan’s to come out and watch us,” said Fisher. “We represent your school, our state. We are proud to wear the maroon and white. We put on a show just for you. We want you to come out and ring those cowbells and have a good time. We want to show you how good we are and how much pride we have in MSU.”
