2009 Positional Analysis

Entering the fall the Bulldogs had questions at QB… you know it, I know and so did everyone else. The QBs had to learn a new offense, learn to lead, and prove they could handle the pressure, all of which could be an overwhelming task. There was also the question of, who would run the offense? Would it be Tyson Lee, Chris Relf or the newcomer Tyler Russell?

Now, entering gameweek questions remain but the Bulldogs feel they have two QBs they can depend on. Tyson Lee and Chris Relf will both see action but the starter hasn’t been determined and according to they will not know who will take the first snap until after the opening kick. Field position and the play called will determine who takes the first snap in the season opener. If that’s the case one could expect the see Tyson Lee if a pass is called and Chris Relf if the spread option is in order. Should be fun to guess who will be under center on the fifth.

Entering camp Lee still had to earn his spot in the rotation despite being the most experienced QB on the roster. The rising senior had to prove that he had put in the time over the summer, doing the things that were asked of him…mainly throwing the football. Now at the end of fall camp he is State’s best option at QB. He has improved his arm strength and accuracy, in addition to learning the playbook inside and out. Lee was 20 of 26 in their most recent scrimmage including a couple of long pass plays.

If the gameplan calls for airing it out… Lee will likely get the call.

No question Relf has made the biggest improvement at QB this fall. His rep has been one of looking the part but lacking the accuracy to be dependable. Well this summer Relf was dedicated to putting things together and it showed in the fall. His accuracy has improved and that gives the coaching staff the ability to use his running talents which have never been in question. This is not to say he will be a prolific passer, but that he can throw it well enough to keep teams honest.

If the gameplan calls for the option…Relf is your man.

Some have called Tyler Russell the QB of the future for Mississippi State and while that may be the case he has reminded everyone just how big of a challenge it is to go from high school to the SEC and play from day one. Rusell does have all the physical tools to be a good, to great quarterback, but the speed of the game and the complexity of the offense has slowed his progress. Honestly, it is Mississippi State ’s best interest to have him ride the bench in year one, but that will depend much more on the guys in front of him than it does with Russell.
